For countless months I've heard about the new Vibram Fivefingers shoe, the Bikila's. It was supposed to come in January, it was supposed to come in March, etc etc. Now it is finally here! Being a Vibram fan and often seen in public with "Fivetoes" shoes, I was very excited to get my hands on the Bikilas and see just how they would change the running design from the KSOs and KSO Treks. Well they have changed it, they've change it a lot and it's in both mens and womens!
This Saturday May 22nd, Travelcountry will be hosting a new clothing company, 100% living, and Rod Price's slideshow of his book "Racing to the Yukon."
May 14, 2010 - Day 39 - Friday
Destination: Damascus, VA - Trail Days Starting Location: Atkins, VA Today's Miles: 0.00 Trip Miles: 539.10The first thing I did when I got into Damascus was walk up to tent city where the majority of the hikers were staying. Tent City was laid out differently this year because part of the land was under construction for new baseball/soccer fields. Volunteers for the last three days had been cutting and constructing trails and campsites in the posion ivy infested woods running along a stream. The trails ran a 1/2 of a mile in one direction and a 1/4 of a mile in the other. Premium tent sites were being taken quickly. Several communities were springing up with names like Billville, Miss Janets, Riff Raff, Alcatraz, Trail Talk, Dog Bone Fire to name a few. I decided to head over to the Gear repair site to meet old friends. Granite Gear, big Agnes, Osprey, Mountain Hardwear and others were present repairing for free broken or torn gear brought over by thru hikers. Due to the new configuration, the crowds did not enter through this section to get to tent city this year so the numbers of visitors were down this year. Met up with my friend, Fix It Man and he set me up for the weekend. I decided I wasn't going to do anything but relax, eat and have a few beers.
The MountainWorld blog is a new site I discovered by a very experienced Mountaineer Jake Norton. Jake has climed Everest, a few times, as well as being a professional photographer and motivational speaker.
Vibram Fivefingers are well… big… Not the size of the shoe, but their popularity. Almost never before in the outdoor industry has a new technology or design come along and been so popular you literally can’t keep it on the shelf since it came out over 2 years ago.
I gave this article out during our Backpacking 101 class. I think it is a very interesting look at the nature of humans in the outdoors. We all have our own vocalized reasons for being a backpacker... but perhaps there is more to it...
Justin Ownings runs and maintains Birthday Shoes, a blog about Vibram Fivefingers. Lately in the outdoor and running industry the idea of barefoot running as taken a huge leap forward. Along with the idea of running barefoot is Vibram Fivefingers, a shoe that allows you to practically run barefoot with a layer of protection on your feet.
As a regular racer in Pangea's events, I would like to post the details for the next race.

On Saturday May 1st, 2010 theTravelCountry.com employee adventure racing team competed in our longest yet adventure race. For 8 hours we biked, ran, hiked, and canoed through River Rise Preserve State Park, which is just North of Gainesville. It was an incredible experience for all of us that tested our bodies and devotion to the team and sport.
