Vibram Fivefinger KSO Review

09/03/2010 03:39:12 P.M.

Multipurpose, minimal, stylish, comfortable, and form fitting: these are all descriptions of the Vibram Fivefinger’s KSO.  In the original lineup of Fivefingers the KSO quickly sailed to the top as the best selling, best all around shoe.  It’s name stands for Keep-Stuff-Out, and it does just that with an upper fabric that comes up below the ankle.  In this review I want to talk about all the features that make the KSO the “original” best selling all-purpose Vibram Fivefinger.

Fall Running Windproof Jackets

08/17/2010 11:36:55 A.M.

Fall is on its way!  Okay who am I kidding?  It’s still 100 outside, but we have received in some cool products for fall from Mountain Hardwear, Marmot, ArcTeryx, and Patagonia.  Perhaps if you get excited about them enough it will feel like fall? In fall it tends to get a bit colder and being a runner the idea of getting a wind jacket crossed my mind.  What I’ve done is taken four jackets from different companies and compared them in a multitude of different categories: Mountain Hardwear’s Geist, Marmot’s Trail Wind, ArcTeryx’s Celeris, and Patagonia’s Nine Trails.  These are all windproof ultra light jackets that would be great for running up and down mountains on a cold October morning.  The question is which one is the best?

Vibram just released their new style of Fivefingers, the Treksport.  This new shoe combines several of the best elements from three different styles: KSO’s, KSO Treks, and Bikilas.  So you end up with a versatile multifunctional shoe that you can use for trail running, trekking, water sports, or other uses.  The Vibram Treksports are a great shoe for everyday use for any technical outdoor adventure you might partake.

Saturday morning I woke up at 7 am, stretched my legs out of bed, wiggled my toes and took note to remember how comfortable they felt, because in six short hours I would be starting an eighteen-hour adventure race by Pangea Adventure Racing.  I assumed my body would take quite a beating in this race, the longest I’ve attempted to date by ten hours.   My prediction was by the end they would need to carry me off the finish line in a stretcher. I packed up all my gear, made sure I had plenty of food and hydration, and then went to pickup my teammate.   We drove to Florida Forever/Eco Safaris in St. Cloud, Florida arriving a little bit early for the Nocturnal Challenge Adventure Race.  We set up our tent and ate some food and while sitting there we immediately began to notice something… Florida is hot!

Osprey's New Hydraulics Backpacks

07/21/2010 02:04:43 P.M.

Hydrating in the outdoors radically changed after companies like Camelbak and Platypus came out with resevoirs and bags that would replace the water bottle and make drinking on the go easier and more efficient.  Now Osprey has teamed up with Nalgene and designed their own bags that, in my opinion, rival the long-standing competitors.  The new Osprey Hydraulics series has two lines: the Raptor and the Manta.  The basic difference is the Osprey Hydraulics Raptor series has a 2 liter reservoir and the Mantra series has a 3 liter reservoir.  However, the inguinity of the bags go way deeper than the size of the reservoir.  I’m going to take the Raptor 18 and the Manta 20, compare them, and tell you my thoughts on why these backpacks may become a regular lineup in my outdoor gear arsenal.
